Cycling in Shakespeare Country, Bike Fitting and Non Cycling Partners?

The above may appear to be an odd combination, but bear with me as I try to explain this unique holiday package offering. BikeDynamics was astablished by myself, Mike Veal in 2008 as a Bike Fitting business. Since then I have fitted nearly 3000 customers and seen some tremendous transformations as people have become strong, capable and pain free cyclists. I have earned an excellent reputation and this website gets hundreds of hits every day from all over the world. Many customers travel some distance, stay over in the town and have expressed their surprise and delight at both the town and surrounding area. A degree of pride has made me want to show off my town and favourite cycling routes. Bike Fitting is still my core business, but running a parallel holiday business permits a whole new level of fit as I will be riding with the customers every day for a week. The proposal is for all holiday customers to have a bike fit at the start of the week, monitored and developed if necessary as we ride every day. This could give us an opportunity to experiment with different set ups, saddles etc. Ideally you will bring your own bike with you, but we can source you a hire bike if need be, which will definitely need fitting anyway.

Royal Leamington Spa

Royal Leamington Spa is a delightful regency spa town in South Warwickshire a few miles south of Coventry and east of Stratford upon Avon. It has a population of 70,000, excellent shopping, parks, restaurants, 5 bike shops and too may coffee shops to count. It was recently voted the ‘Happiest‘ town in the UK. Our home in the heart of the town also contains the BikeDynamics Fitting Studio, workshop and secure bike storage. This will be the base for our cycling adventures with bike box unpacking / packing, Bike Fitting activities and any maintenance all taking place under this roof. Leamington has easy access to the rail and motorway networks with Birmingham International Airport just 30 minutes away. More importantly we have ready access to some of the nicest roads to ride in the UK. All the days events will start and finish from here, bookended by a group breakfast and afternoon tea on our return. Unfortunately, we can’t accommodate everybody at our premises, so will book you into a local hotel or delightful AirBnB apartments all within approx. 2 minutes walk.

First and foremost this is a cycling holiday. All rides will be fully guided by somebody who has ridden these roads for the last 30 years (that will usually be me!). Warwickshire has a rolling terrain and is rarely flat. We can go out for 30-40 miles with no significant hills to speak of and still accumulate 1500ft (450m) ascent. We can also seek out the local hills and you can compare your Strava times with the Women’s Tour of Britain QOM’s who have visited this region over the last couple of years. The roads we ride are quiet and largely well surfaced. Pushing out a little further will take us into the area of outstanding natural beauty that is the ‘Cotswolds’. Delightful villages such as Chipping Campden, Stow on the Wold and Broadway are all within a days ride. We have the choice of either flat(ish) or hilly routes with amongst many others, Saintbury, Dovers and Larkstoke hills all offering a significant challenge, especially when linked together. Routes can be decided on the day (during breakfast) based on the wishes of the participants, weather and opportunity to meet up with non-riding partners. Expect anywhere between 40 and 100 miles per day with 2000-10000ft of climbing. Lightweight road-bikes with 25mm tyres suit the terrain. We keep the maximum number of riders to 6 with an average speed between 14 and 17mph. GPS routes can be downloaded before we set off but the intention would be to stay together as a group. The pace will be dictated by the slowest rider, who could well be me!

Non-Cycling Partners

I have been on numerous cycling holidays where I would have loved my wife Janice to see the wonderful scenery, experience the local cuisine etc. The problem is, whilst the group is out cycling, there is rarely enough to interest a non-cycling partner either back at base or in the slow moving support van. Recognising this, I believe our cycling holiday proposition is unique in providing a parallel holiday experience for the non-cyclist with considerable overlap during the day. Other than the delights of the town itself, we have Warwick and Kenilworth Castles on our doorstep, numerous National Trust properties, Stratford upon Avon and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Coventry Cathedral, the Cotswolds and many other attractions. Where possible, we would look to coincide the lunch break or a coffee stop of the riding and non-riding teams, then all meeting up again back at base for afternoon tea. Fellow non cyclist Janice will be the guide and driver for the day. Meeting en route will also provide some flexibility (space permitting) if some riders would rather not ride the whole route. Please note, you don’t have to bring a non-cycling partner, the trip can work either way.

Shakespeare and Stratford upon Avon

No visit to the area would be complete without a trip to Stratford to see a performance at the renowned Royal Shakespeare Theatre (RSC). Don’t worry, this is not compulsory, but if you wanted to, we will take you for a pre Theatre dinner and seats at whichever play is on at the time. Highlights of the 2018 summer season look to include Christopher Ecclestone as Macbeth and John Troughton as Falstaff in the Merry Wives of Windsor.

Book us up, we’re coming!

Follow the links below for full details of what’s involved and how much it costs. Essentially the rate is the same for cyclists and non-cyclists alike and includes transfers from Birmingham airport or the local Train stations, 7 nights room only accommodation in a twin or double room, breakfasts and a welcoming dinner at the house on arrival. Cyclists will receive a full Bike Fitting and help with their position and technique throughout the week. Non cyclists get a personal tour guide and transport, entry costs to local attractions and the opportunity to meet up with the cyclists out on the road. What’s not included? Bike Hire, flights to and from the UK, evening meals, lunch and drinks whilst out during the day, travel insurance. By its very nature, this holiday package is very flexible. We can happily arrange other transfers, bike hire, different accommodation, dietary requirements etc. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
